Annotation
In this chronological survey, we will study the spectrum of German literature from naturalism to expressionism. The seminar is designed to engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of literature from the variety genres at the turn of the 19th and 20th century.
Syllabus: Naturalism, Impressionism, Art nouveau, Neoromanticism, Symbolism, "Heimatkunst". Prose at the turn of the century: Heinrich Mann, Thomas Mann, Robert Musil, Robert Walser, Rainer Maria Rilke, Hermann Hesse, Hugo von Hofmannsthal.
Drama at the turn of the century: Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Arthur Schnitzler, Frank Wedekind. Lyrics: Hofmannsthal, George, Rilke, Morgenstern.
Expressionism: Franz Werfel, Alfred Döblin, Carl Einstein; G.Kaiser, Hasenclever; Georg Trakl, Georg Heym, Gottfried Benn, Franz Werfel, Else Lasker-Schüler u.a.
