Annotation

The course deals with the mutual relations that bind humans and society, or culture in the broad, anthropological understanding of these concepts. It shows what forms social and cultural relations take in the areas of kinship, gender and age, politics and power, social consciousness and direct and mediated communication, religion and ritual, ethnicity and nationalism.

It teaches students to critically examine the question of human identity (problematized by some social scientists) and to reflect on the social nature of the human being. Introduces briefly the history of social and cultural anthropology as well as fieldwork and other methods of anthropological research.

In its seminar component, it helps to strengthen the presentation, rhetorical, and dialogical skills needed for pedagogical practice. Although anthropology itself is not explicitly mentioned in the curriculum framework, its knowledge is implicitly and significantly included in the curriculum.

The course caters for these social science aspects of the secondary school curriculum and thus prepares students directly for teaching the foundations of social science.
