Students will gain an overview of the starting points and approaches in supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities in the context of psychosocial and cognitive peculiarities. They will learn the basic terminology and get acquainted with the etiology of intellectual disabilities.
The aim of the course is to develop students' critical and independent thinking, to describe the changes in the position of people with intellectual disabilities in society, their causes and consequences for the theory and practice of special education and other helping professions. The course will consist of the following topics: 1.
The changing position of people with intellectual disabilities in society in an international context, facilitators of change; implications for theory, practice and research. 2. The concept of intellectual disability (terminology, classification, etiology). 3.
Legal status of a person with a disability respectively with intellectual disability, human rights dimension. 5. Psychosocial, educational and communicational specifics of intellectual disability. 6.
Bases, principles and selected strategies of support for a person with intellectual disability, quality of life, quality of support. 7. Current issues related to the education of pupils with intellectual disability.
