Annotation
The course offers an informative historical and political overview of the history of the Germans in the Czech lands and the way they coexisted with the Czechs from the 13th century (the Přemyslid-led colonization of empty border territories) through the time of Charles IV, the Hussite wars, the Jagiellonian and Habsburg periods, to the Czech-German rivalry under the banner of German and Czech nationalism in the 19th century. The course concludes with the Sudeten German issue in the Czechoslovak Republic, the wartime period, and the post-war expulsion of Germans.
It also includes a look at the complicated Czech-German relations after 1945 and how they are calming down now that both countries are allies in the European Union.
