Syllabus

1.     Organizace kurzu a systém práce.

2.     Jazyk a obraz světa. Čas, prostor a jejich jazykové ztvárnění. Whorfova hypotéza. Kulturní a jazyková relativita.

3.     Sémiotika: znak. Druhy znaků. Jazyk jako znakový systém. Výrazový a významový plán jazyka.

4.     Lingvistika: synchronní a diachronní. Jednotky émické a etické. La langue - la parole.

5.     Paradigma a syntagma: osa výběru a osa kombinace.

6.     Jazykový kontakt. Franz Boas: jazyk, etnicita a kultura. Řečová a jazyková komunita. Ukázka: Karel Čapek.

7.     Jazyk jako systém, užití a ideologie/postoj: language system, language use, language ideology. Sprachbund - Sprechbund. Odlišnost lingvistické antropologie od lingvistiky.

8.     Ideologie a indexikalita. Světový názor a deixis: zde – teď – já. Sociální komunikace přímá a mediovaná. Jazyk a média. Jazyk politiky a politika jazyka.

9.     Standard a variabilita. Jazyková správnost: preskripce a deskripce. Spisovná čeština. Diglosie a semidiglosie. Jazyk a národní identita: silversteinovská kritika Benedicta Andersona.

10.  Sociolingvistika: William Labov – jazyk a sociální stratifikace.

Annotation

The course is an introduction to comparative study of cultural systems and is based upon theoretical and ethnographic material provided by linguistic anthropology. As a field of inquiry, linguistic anthropology focuses on studying various aspects of the multifarious and dynamic relationship between communication and culture, or society.

After examining semiotic conception of language, we go on explaining certain relevant parts of synchronic linguistics in order to gain the body of knowledge that is relevant for further studies of topics within the broader theme of "language and culture" – e.g., relationship among language, ethnicity and culture; language behavior and the limits of its awareness; interrelations among language system, language use and language ideology; communicative competence as related to interethnic attitudes; language and gender; direct and mediated communication; lanague, thought and world view; language, social identity and stratification.
