Syllabus

Lectures: 1. What is science, functions, features, theory, induction and deduction 2. Structure of research, research problem, research question, operationalization, hypothesis, research project 3, Research designs, quantitative and qualitative designs, basic difference between observational and experimental designs 4. Introduction to sampling methods, population, sample, representativeness, introduction to data gathering methods, research ethics 5. Introduction to descriptive statistics, location, variability, shape, normal distribution 6. Relationship between two variables (covariance, Pearson’s r, chi-square test] 7. Validity and reliability of measurement

Seminars: 1. – 7. Students will prepare a presentation about methodological aspects of a selected research paper.

This will require:

- download research paper from scientific databases (Web of Science, EBSCO, Scopus)

- upload the paper to Moodle app and answer the prepared questions

- prepare a presentation about methodological aspects of a paper

- briefly introduce: aim of the article, research problem, research questions, and hypotheses

- focus on methodological issues such as: research design, sampling method, data gathering, measurement, data analysis, validity, reliability, …?

- brief summary of the results (how authors presented the results?, an example of a table, graph, or so)

Annotation

The main objective of this course is to provide students an overview of research methods used by empirical researchers in behavioral sciences including Kinanthropology (sport sciences).
