Description of the Study Unit

The aims of the study unit are that the student:

- is familiar with the definitions of social work and community development work

- is able to relate the history of community development work to that of social work and apply that understanding to the present diverse contexts

- is familiar with the basic professional approaches to social work and community development work

- knows the basics of professional expertise in social work and community development

- is able to understand the different organisations and their roles in social work

The content of the study unit includes:

- Definitions of social work in different national and international contexts, with special reference to the internationally accepted definition (IFSW), the Czech context and another national context or the student’s national context

- Definitions of community development work in different national and international contexts.

- History of social and community development work

- Professional approaches and expertise in social and community development work including introduction to the range of understanding of social work according to different theoretical models for example psycho-social work, task centred approaches and participatory approaches linked to user participation and anti-oppressive practice

- Changing and contested understandings of expertise in the field

Process of the Study Unit

Orientation to the study field

Orientation assignment writing before the first contact teaching and

Working with the text during the first contact week.

Rewriting the text during week two using reflection of contact teaching and online learning tools

Week 4-5 (1 cr.)

Role of a professional in the field

Online video lecture concerning different organisations and their roles in social work.2 h

The students collect the basic documentary elements of their work place or the place where they are going to make their first placement on Fronter. They use the online lecture and the interview ideas shared in the contact teaching (wk 1) to prepare an interview 3 h.

Interview one professional social or community development worker, write up the interview with reflections 12 h

Group work on Fronter making preparations for the seminar 7 h

Week 5

Seminar concerning interviews of a professional; analyzing professionalism 3 h

Week 7-8 & 9 (3 cr.)

Reading for exam; three set books in English (28 pages + 219 pages + 238 pages) and the examination in week 9
