Fieldwork and ethnography are important research approaches in social sciences (especially in anthropology, and ethnomusicology) that offer researchers a valuable in-depth understanding of the cultures they study. In this seminar, students will examine basic questions, problems, methods, and writing styles, as related to ethnographic work.
More specifically, they will learn how to ethnographically study music cultures, and especially music performances of particular social groups. Students will be required to attend concerts and other music events, and respond to them in the form of short weekly written assignments.
Part of the seminar’s work will also be reading assignments, and a final ethnographic paper.
