From its very beginning, ethnomusicology dealt with various musics of minorities from the whole world. In this course, we will introduce the notion and different concepts of “minority” in anthropology and related social sciences/humanities (especially in ethnomusicology) and of development and change of its significance according to regions and time epochs.
Introduction of the eminent topics related to “music and minorities” will be based on selection of key ethnomusicological researches from around the world as well as from the contemporary environment of Central Europe, especially Prague, Czech Republic and Vienna, Austria. The course will be based on lectures and discussions on selection of readings and audio/video examples.
Students will be invited to offer own ideas of research projects.
