The Cultural History of Vodka

Class at Faculty of Humanities |
YBA282

Annotation

In this lecture, vodka is regarded as an element of Russian (and Polish) quotidian culture in which all aspects of Russian life can be seen as in a magic crystal (Kirill Kobrin). The pursuit of becoming a world power has been pushed by alcohol tax, the courses of war have been impacted through the consumption of vodka, the church has had to deal with this Russian God (Viktor Erofeev), and vodka has entered literature, fine arts and cinematics, and has his unchallenged place in advertising and folklore.

The affectionate worship for "mommy vodka", on which Russian collective identity is more and more based, is faced with national self-destruction by the excessive consumption of vodka. There is a great difference between Eastern and Western drinking culture.

These problems will be investigated separately, as well as in their interpenetration.
