Anotace:

Private philanthropic foundations are not a very well-known institution of modern society. Some of them – Carnegie, Rockefeller or Ford Foundation – are close to being famous, but they also remain pretty mysterious entities. This course explains what foundations are and how they influence society and politics. The philanthropic foundations will be described as a phenomenon most typical of the United States and Western Europe, but we will also look at their operations in the Czech and Central European societies.

First, a broader picture of the foundations' history and their role in promoting the well-being of society will be outlined. Second, the cases of particularly interesting impact (or the absence thereof) of the foundations’ giving will be studied drawing on archival and published documents. More specifically, the course will investigate the impact of private donors on social sciences at crucial junctures of their formation.

The course will combine some lecturing with more interactive formats.
