Anotace
The 21st century has brought a wide range of security challenges and threats on both systemic and regional levels. New threats and risks are emerging, while old remain, but their nature is constantly changing. Advances in technology open new possibilities that are being exploited by various actors, such as terrorist groups or authoritarian states to create insecurity and instability. Russian aggression against Ukraine and the hybrid warfare tactics require Europe and the Western World to significant shift their security policies to be able to cope with present and future threats. The democratic world faces challenges unprecedented since the end of the Cold War.
The course focuses on European security in an insecure world with special emphasis on Central and Eastern Europe, where recent developments cast shadows from the region`s turbulent and often tragic history. Students examine how Central and Eastern European states view their security and how they prioritize threats. Issues such as securitization of migration, hybrid, informational and asymmetric warfare or democratic backsliding are discussed and put into context.
