Enlightenment and Religion: Hume's Dialogues

Předmět na Fakulta humanitních studií |
YBF311

Anotace

Textbook definition says that Enlightenment is “the age of reason” and famous enlightened men are supposed to be proud holders and/or defenders of explicit or at least implicit position of “atheism”. David Hume is considered to be the “king of enlightened atheists or infidels”. Is this view of Enlightenment and particularly of Hume truly supported by both textual and contextual evidence? Many still acute questions will be derived from reading Hume´s Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, masterpiece of argumentation with unfinished agenda.

Hume´s mastery in essay writing is well known and established fact. Therefore, students are free to make a choice to write an essay on topics discussed and inspired by seminar programme or write an independent 2000 words essay. The word count should include all footnotes, endnotes, and quotations but should exclude the bibliography. Please include the word count on the title page of your coursework.

Students should present and discuss (up to 20 minutes) final essay design and argument on seminars held from 9 to 12 week of semester.

Final essay should be submitted by an e-mail ( essay file attached should be in Word or pdf) sent to tomas.kunca@fhs.cuni.cz within the period commencing on 5 January and closing on 9 February (deadline).
