Anotace

The course deals with some of the most persistent topics of modern political thought. The debated issues will include questions of justice, equality, civic obligations, human rights, power and liberty. For each class a set of important texts expressing various ideas on the issue will be presented by a group of students and then thoroughly discussed in the class. The classes will be extended to three hours but they will be held only once a fortnight. This will allow us to discuss the issues more intensively in the class while providing students enough time for extensive reading of course materials at home. During the course, students will get acquainted with influential texts of e.g. E.

Burke, T. Payne, J. S. Mill, I. Berlin, H. Arendt, M. Foucault, J. Rawls, R. Dworkin, R. Nozick and C. Taylor. Students will be required to attend classes, regularly fulfil the readings, work in groups on chosen topics and participate in class discussions.
