Annotation
This course is concerned with conceptual and empirical possibilities and limits of ritual studies, if applied on the history of modern Europe. Within introductory lessons, some theories and conceptual frameworks of ritual studies are to be discussed; attention is particularly placed on analytical categories, such as symbolical and ritual agency, performativity and "event", temporal structure, ritual repetitiveness and production of memory, as well as on classifications and functions of rituals.
Further lessons focuses on the ways, in which ritual studies have been recently applied in historiography, with a special emphasis on historical rituals both in the public sphere where power and identity were performed (coronations, national festivities, civic and academic ceremonies etc.), and in everyday life (initiations, subversions, rites of passage etc.)
