Annotation
In this course we shall focus on "the border", understood not as a fixed line in the symbolical or geographical space, but as an (unstable) result of processes of symbolization and discursive institutionalization of difference. We shall understand the construction of the border as a practice of "bordering, ordering, othering" (Henk van Houtum).
At first we will introduce the classical concepts of social groups´ construction, then we shall focus on the territorial borders and their institutionalization with regard to the identity politics and concepts of territorialization / deterritorialization. We shall discuss topics as: symbols a reprezentations of power on the nation-state border; the constitutive influence and agency of the local actors in the borderlands; particular social practices on the border (migration; smuggling etc.); EU enlargement and europeanization, regionalism etc.
