Democracy, liberalism, populism - these are the central concepts on which this class is going to focus. Starting from contemporary debates about populism (Jan-Werner Muller), most of the semester will be dedicated to a critical analysis of the earlier supporters and challengers of democracy or liberalism, such as Max Weber, Hans Kelsen and Carl Schmitt. Their texts will be read in English.
