Annotation: This course explores the field of philanthropic foundations from the viewpoint and using the tools of social sciences. Its focus is on modern private philanthropic foundations which emerged in the United States before the end of the 19th century and gradually became the dominant model of foundations across the globe. Specific attention is given to the most influential foundations: Carnegie, Rockefeller, Ford, Gates Foundations in the United States, major German and Western European foundations, Hlávka foundation and other Czech foundations as well as recently established large foundations in the emerging economies of the global East and South.
