This study summarises the theoretical and practical aspects of non-invasive continuous measurement of regional cerebral oxygentation using near-infrared spectrocsopy (NIRS) in neurosurgical patients. The authors decribe their own practical experience of monitoring pataients with brain damage and also present illustrative case studies.
A common aim in the treatment of neuro-intensive patients is to maintain adequaate cerebral oxygenation. Regional cerebral oximetry appears to be a promising non-invasive method continuously to monitor the extent of cerebral damage in a neuro-intensive care environment.
The technique may prove to be a viable tool for fast and accurate diagnostics as well as reflecting the efeect of treatment not only in neuro-intensive care but in other clinical applications.
