In this study of socialization in the elementary school classrooms a large body of data acquired in qualitative multiple case study of five Czech basic schools (i.e. comprehensive primary and lower secondary schools) was reanalysed. We have described the processes of class formation and looping (one teacher teaching the class for several consecutive years) common in the Czech primary school.
The findings are compared with a model of school socialisation and with approaches used in class formation in other school systems. The results are interpreted within the theory of Czech school as a loosely coupled system.
