W. Matzka (1798–1891) was an important mathematician and university professor in the Czech countries in the middle of the 19th century.

His main interest was algebra, analysis and elementary geometry; however he paid attention to many applications of mathematics as well. In this article, there are presented especially his works on chronology, astronomy and geodesy to demonstrate the broad-spectrum of his interests.
