Younger school-age children's drawing style in the Draw-a-man test

Abstract

The Draw-a-Man test was used in a longitudinal ethnographic research of school-age children. The drawings of first-fourth graders were likewise analyzed with the help of the drawing style concept.

A latent crisis of artistic representation has been thus discovered. Discussing findings inspiration is drawn from the theorists of development from analytic to synthetic drawing (Jirásek, Švancarová) and from the theorists of hieratic (versus direct) perspective (Uspenskij, Žegin).

Thus attained are not only deeper understanding of the development of drawing of the observed children, but likewise deeper understanding of the traditional concepts for the gradation of drawing in younger school-age: analytic versus synthetic, intellectually realistic versus visually realistic.
