Mieczyslav Kolinski and German Musicology in Prague Between 1930 and 1945

Abstract

The article deals with a recently discovered collection of phonographic wax cylinders in the Library of the Institute of Musicology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague. It focuses on ethnomusicological and other activities of Mieczyslaw Kolinski in Prague between 1933 and 1939 with regard to Berlin school of camparative musicology and American cultural anthropology.

The second part examines an early ethnomusicological research conducted by musicologist Gustav Becking and his Ph.D. students in collaboration scholars of Slavic Studies, Ethnology and Linguistics at the Faculty of Arts, German University in Prague between 1930 and 1945. The research is mainly based on sources from Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv, Charles University Archives and other institutions.
