The School System – A (non)Public Affair? : Public Views of School and Education

Abstract

Interpretation and analysis of values and attitudes of the Czech public to education and schooling, development and current problems. Sources of new knowledge are data from an extensive quantitative research of autors.

The attention is focused on the methodology, development of questionnaire, techniques and applied statistics. Publication investigates a) Czech public’s attitudes to education, aspirations and preferred educational tracks, views on changes and roles of actors b) public views on functions and issues of schooling, school family relation, comparison of reality with expectations c) justice in education, attitudes to exclusion or inclusion d) views on the content of education, teaching subjects and competencies e) testing and new standardized secondary school exam (maturita) f) a picture of current teachers, prestige and issues of teacher profession.
