Contemporary Czech discourse on language regulation

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2010

Abstract

The report describes the contemporary Czech discourse on the language regulation in the past five years. The dispute between the so called prescriptivists and descriptivists is the main focus, further discussed are the intervention of power into the language (trailing Czech as a foreign language, gender correct use of the language) and popularization programmes and publications.

Other theoretical contribution to the language regulation, inspiration from world-wide linguistics (discourse analysis, language planning) and a return to the traditional concepts of the Prague linguistic school are analysed.
