Shells as symbols and witnesses of far-reaching contacts in prehistory and Late Antiquity

Abstract

The role of shells as symbols is followed since neolithic (Spondylus, Cardium pottery) until Late Antiquity (cowrie shells as symbols of fertility). The were imported to Europe from distant places, incldudingthe Red Sea and Indian Ocean.
