Given its geographic proximity to the overpowering United States, the topic of independence has been crucial for Mexico throughout its modern history. The article first analyzes the notion of independence and its use in international relations.

Then it shows examples supporting both the notion that Mexico has been in a dependent position vis-a-vis the United States and that it successfully defied external pressures and consciously acted against U.S. interests. In the concluding section, it offers a synthetic explanatory approach that views national independence as a powerful discursive tool, which might be invoked by privileged speakers.

This tool enhances social cohesion as well as shielding local interests from international economic pressures.
