Félicien Rops : Les Sataniques and Les Diaboliques as binary conceptualization of woman

Abstract

This theoretical study is aimed at fine-artistic and literary analysis of production of Belgian illustrator and graphic artist Félicien Rops (1833–1898) as a unique proof of artistic, literary and contemporary reflection. Rops´ authentic production was based on interpretation of particular motives and themes from belles-lettres, namely novel's of the fin de siècle (violence, sexuality, narcotics, narcissism etc.).

As an agent of enrichmenf of Rops´ production could be named synthesis of witchcraft phenomenon, style of decadence („style de decadence“) and atmosphere of fin de siècle era. This study is focused on creative connection between the two artistic cycles Les Sataniques and Les Diaboliques.

Special attention is paid to status of woman in relations between feminism and postmodernism, sexual anarchy, hysteria, femme fatal phenomenon and influences on Rops´ art. That is why Rops is ranked among the most original and controversial artists of erotic decadence and nihilistic symbolism.
