One of the common "gestures" of French poststructuralist philosophers and literary theoreticians, searching for the essence of writing (both literary and critical), is provided by its reversal against language, discourse and even culture which produces it; a gesture I call "writing in spite of language". This negative stance, however, may be understood as an entirely creative act that offers a wide range of metaphors (the fold, the moiré, the anamorphose) and approaches, which help reconstruct writing not only in the verbal sphere but also elsewhere.
Thus, in my study on French literary thinking and its visual inspiration, I am trying to outline a new interdisciplinary perspective - "the physiognomy of writing," which would allow visuality to introduce an original mode of reflection on writing.
