The Rustle of Language

Abstract

In this essay Roland Barthes tries to outline a phenomenon of the „rustle“ of language in comparison with the noise of a perfectly functioning machine, which produces „noise of no noise.“ Speech remains condemned to stammer, writing, to silence and to distinguishing between signs: in any case, there always remains too much meaning for language to fulfill a jouissance appropriate to its substance. The rustle of language forms an utopia of music of meaning.
