Abstract

Review essay of Douglas Cairns, Fritz-Gregor Hermann and Terry Penner (eds.), Pursuing The Good: Ethics and Metaphysics in Plato’s Republic, Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh 2007. This volume gathers sixteen papers at the fourth Leventis conference entitled ‘The Good and the Form of the Good in Plato’s Republic’ organized and presided by Terry Penner.

The first seven papers discuss the prudential interpretation of Plato’s Republic, and the rest is devoted to the discussion concerning the good and mathematics (chapters 12 and 13), the good and the Forms (chapters 8-11) and the relation between Plato’s and Aristotle’s conception of the good (chapters 14 and 15), whereas the last, chapter 16, concerns Plato’s philosophical method.
