Perception of language competences

Abstract

In the years 2004-2007 a questionnaire research aimed at mapping the current situation of the level of language knowledge and skills of postgraduate students was conducted. Subjectively perceived deficits and needs were chosen.

The investigation had two main objectives. First, to find out how the students in doctoral programmes perceive their linguistic competences and what levels were achieved during their previous language training.

The second goal was the formulation of their needs, e.g. determination of those skills that are considered essential for PhD students; or those they would like and needed to develop further. This information is valuable for teachers preparing specialised language teaching courses at an appropriate level.
