Abstract
This article is about old germanic and northern symbols called runes. It gives the description of the rune´s origin – on the one hand according to nordic mythology and on the other hand according to scholar´s view.
Further it introduces into the question of runic alphabet, the meaning and understanding of the word rune, shortly mentions the use of these symbols before and during the Second World War and not least, it gives the thought about how runes were used by the old inhabitants of the northern Europe.
