Horizontal and vertical differentiation of yeast colonies.

Publication

Abstract

Yeast population growing within a colony possesses specific attributes and capabilities that are ruled out in individual yeast cells. One such a capability is differentiation and formation of specifically localised specialised cells within the population.

Their function together with other colony features is usually subordinated to the main purpose - profit of the whole population and its survival. Studies on Saccharomyces cerevisiae colonies revealed spatiotemporal differentiation of colonial population and specific fate of cells located at specific colony regions.

We show that some of the differentiation processes occur since early population development.
