The Errant Paths of the Historiography of a European Nation

Publication |
2006

Abstract

This article analyzes contemporary trends of the Romanian historiography focused on ancient history of the Romanian territory. The text concludes that Romanian historical literature is still ruled by ethnically orientated concept of the history: the idea of “the romanised Geto-Dacian and christianized ethnic base”.

According to this theory, the “preromanian” ethnic assimilated influences of the all “migration” nations (Slavs, Gerrmans, Celts, Huns, etc). Ideologically and politically orientated disputes also lead to tendentious history teaching and strengthen latent xenophobia in Romanian society(D.

Protase, L. Bîrziu, C.

Opreanu, T. Petrescu-Dîmboviţa,i D.

G. Theodor).

Sober view of the ancient history is uphold by a few historians only (G.-A. Niculescu, F.

Constantiniu, L. Boia, M.

Babeş).
