Abstract

The imperial cult in a newly established province Dacia was a efficient tool of romanisation. The official imperial cult was focused on emperor whose cult was practised by a priest with a title sacerdos arae Augustae (sacerdotalis, coronatus Daciarum III).

The centre of the cult (ara Augusti) was Colonia Ulpia Traiana Sarmezegetusa where concilium Daciarum III used to meet regularly. This concilium existed in Dacia between 169(?)-257.

It minted its own coins with caption PROVINCIA DACIA (247-257). The imperial cult existed Dacia on provincial and on municipal level.

Municipal priests had usually the title flamines or sacerdotes. Most evidences come from Sarmizegetusa and Apulum where family relations among priests can be found.

The situation in Dacia shows great analogy with other Danube provinces: Minting of own coins by the provincial assembly has an analogy with the Upper Moesia. Some typical institutions (seviri augustales, cultores Larum Aug.)are missing in Dacia.
