The relationship between the quality of ground waters and the forest cover in regions affected by high levels of acid atmospheric deposition – a case study of the Krušné hory Mts., Czech Republic

Abstract

The relationship between groundwater quality, the areal extent and the state of health of forest was studied within a network of 26 experimental catchments in the Krušné hory Mts. that have been affected by prolonged atmospheric deposition of high levels of sulfur and nitrogen. The results showed that, in the presence of coniferous forest, the negative impacts of acid atmospheric deposition on groundwater quality are significantly greater.

Simultaneously, the deterioration in the quality of groundwater, indicated by increased concentrations of aluminum, plays a part in damaging the health of the forest.
