The brown bear (Ursus arctos), his disappearance and return to our nature

Abstract

The discussions and disputes about big carnivores and their return to the Czech Republic are held for a long time and often perseveringly. Conservationists on the one hand and farmers, gardeners, hunters and beekeepers on the other hand maintain different opinions.

Although the existence or non-existence of bear, wolf and lynx very strongly depends on good knowledge of their life and habits, still it’s not available a work which would in our country clearly analyze the causes of the gradual disappearance of big carnivores and define the possibilities and conditions for their eventual return. The study presented here does not lack ambition to substitute this missing work, so it is kind of a prodroma, dedicated to the history and present of the occurrence of the biggest of the big carnivores, the brown bear.
