Indonesia: Is tourism a threat to traditional local environment?

Abstract

Indonesia is a very diverse country in Southeast Asia. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the intensity of tourism activities by both independent travellers, as well as traditional tourists.

However, the increase in the number of visitors of the latter group, especially in some exposed places, is gradually destroying the unique atmosphere of the country and its genius loci. The paper analyses changes that developing tourism brings to the local society and shows the examples of the transformation of genius loci in selected destinations.
