Acute heart failure in newborn with malposition of umbilical vein catheter

Abstract

Catheterization of umbilical vein is common and useful technique to assessing of central vein line in critically ill newborns. In this report we describe preterm neonate from 28th week of gestation, who died from acute heart failure in the day 10 of life.

E. Coli sepsis was causal etiology of exitus because of dislocation of umbilical vein catheter throught the wall of ductus venosus.

Optimal anatomic position of the catheter´s tip and complications are discussed in conclusion of article.
