Venous thromboembolism, including deep vein thrombosis as well as pulmonary embolism, represents a common and costly disease that is associated with high morbidity and mortality in the European Union and North American countries. Treatment of acute venous thromboembolism, post-thrombotic syndrome, recurrence of venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, pulmonary hypertension and expenses associated with treatment of anticoagulation therapy complications are enormously costly.
Adequately administered thromboprophylaxis, which is unfortunately often neglected, plays a key role in the reduction of these expenses. In this article the authors focus on the importance of venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism prevention and show possibilities how to enforce them effectively and efficiently.
