Atypical manifestation of zoster infection associated with an unusual wild-type varicella-zoster (VZV) strain

Publication at Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové |
2010

Abstract

Our Department of Epidemiology at the University of Defence in Hradec Kralove in cooperation with the Faculty Hospital Hradec Kralove, School of Medicine, Charles University Hradec Kralove and CDC in Atlanta has been conducting a prospective study focused on the genotype analysis of different strains of VZV. The first preliminary data were published at Vakcinologie 1/2010.

Among the analysed specimens, two showed unusual SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphism). These patients have had an extensive travel history to tropical countries.

The analysis of these two specimens has indicated a new strain, possibly arising from a recombination of the E1 and M2 type VZV strains. More extensive work is required.
