Impacts of acid rain and forest practices on run-off genesis in the Jizera Mountains, Czech Republic

Abstract

In the 1980s, watersheds of the Jizera Mts declined in consequence of the acid atmospheric deposition and commercial forestry practices. The water yield increased and the annual percentage of base-flow dropped.

In surface waters, particularly low pH values (4-5), high content of aluminium (1-2 mg/l), extinction of fish, and drastically reduced zooplankton, phytoplankton, and benthic fauna were observed.
