Two prehistoric cultures in one flatland:A phenomenological analysis of landscape

Abstract

The flatland to the west from Kladno, a part of the Kladno plateau, belongs among abundantly used ancient settlement areas. Today, it is a mostly agricultural area with small woods and villages.

In the past, it was among others inhabited by two cultures whose settlement strategies I compare using the methods of landscape phenomenology (TILLEY 1994, 2004a, 2004b, 2008). These two cultures are the Funnel-beaker (Age of Copper) and Aunjetitz culture (Bronze Age).

Human body and its most ordinary activity – walking – is used as a research tool. In the paper, I am interested both in the modalities of the phenomenological method and the critical analysis of the sensual data.

I deal with the question of how the people of different times and different cultures behaved in the same terrain and how their settlement pattern varied.
