Abstract

This book focuses on an attempt to briefly introduce Byzantine philosophy. To a thorough analysis are subjected the connections between Byzantine philosophy and the previous period, particularly with regard to the determining theological standpoints.

Seperate chapters of the book also focus on such important issues as the place of philosophy in Byzantine education, the relationship between philosophy and rhetoric and that of Platonism and Aristotelism in Byzantine thought. The book also includes a study by M. Řoutil: East of Antioch.

The Greek Thought Outside the Byzantium, the 2nd–8th Century. A Syriac Tradition, focusing on the translation of antique and early Byzantine scholarship into the Aramaic environment of Syria and Mesopotamia.
