Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis

Abstract

Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) is the most frequent secondary osteoporosis as a consequence of glucocorticoids in the drugs. The bone mineral density decreases mostly and very fast in the first 6 months of therapy.

The fracture risk is higher that expected from bone mineral decrease. The main reasons of GIOP are suppression of bone formation, increase of bone resorption, changes in calcium metabolism.

Therapy should be started earlier that in the other forms of osteoporosis
