The use of immunohistochemistry in the differential diagnosis of thyroid gland tumors with follicular growth pattern

Abstract
Aim of study was to evaluate expression of galectin-3,cytokeratin19,neural cell adhesion molecule,E-cadherin in thyroid gland tumors with follicular growth pattern.Series of 87 follicular adenomas(FAs),26 follicular carcinomas(FCs),26 follicular variants of papillary carcinoma(FVPCs)was studied.Gal3 expression was found in 33% FAs,in 50% FCs,in 92% FVPCs. CK19 expression was found in 13% FAs,in 15% FCs,in 65% FVPCs.NCAM expression was found in 69% FAs,in 77% FCs,in 27% FVPCs.Ecad expression was found in 93% FAs,in 85% FCs,in 65% FVPCs.Significant difference in expression of all studied markers between FVPC versus FA and FC was found,in contrast to FA and FC.
