Uterine fibroids and insulin resistance

Publication |
2006

Abstract

In this prospective study, the authors analyzed associations of uterine fibroids and insulin resistance examined by insulin test, lipidogram and hormonal profile. The study included 80 premenopausal women without hormonal contraception.

Ultrasound diagnosis of uterine fibroids was made in 59 of participants (cases), 21 women without fibroids were controls. In the fibroid group, the components of metabolic syndrome were expressed less.

Cases had significantly higher levels of plasma HDL cholesterol and non-significantly lower plasmatic levels of cholesterol, fasting insulin, fasting C-peptide, and lower atherogenic index. Dependence of fibroids and insulin resistance per se was not proved.
