Indicator microdialysis technique for a quantitative assesment of the regional tissue perfusion

Abstract

Indicator microdialysis technique uses microdialysis for a quantitative assesment of the regional tissue perfusion. A special slim probe with a semipermeable membrane at the tip is inserted into tissue where small molecules are interchanged between the fluid inside probe and the intestitium.

Substance (indicator) which is supplied to the probe is partly diffusing into the interstitial fluid where it is resorbed into blood capillaries. In a steady state diffusion of indicator out of probe is proportional to the tissue perfusion but it is also influenced by many other factors like tissue diffusibility of indicator, intensity of probe perfusion, ultrafiltration of a fluid out of probe, movement of tissue or probe, space heterogeneity of tissue etc
