Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis - is it possible to diagnose it by fine-needle aspiration cytology?

Abstract
Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is an uncommon but important condition characterized by presence of gas within the bowel wall. The first case of PCI diagnosed by endoscopic fine needle aspiration cytology is reported.
This rare entity should be included among other disorders of GI tract presenting cytologically by multinucleated giant cells, where the fine-needle aspiration cytology can be useful. Its endoscopic plus cytologic features are characteristic enough to establish the correct diagnosis.
Thus, an unnecessary surgery can be avoided.
